Dr. Abd A Al Hasan

Role: Research Associate

About

I joined the Newcastle Fibrosis Research Group in July 2016 to work on a project funded by pharamaceutical giants Abbvie aimed at investigating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic liver steatosis (NAHS).

I have a background in medicine having completed a Doctor of Medicine Diploma (MD) at Damascus University in Syria. This was a six year course of medical study which included classes and courses related to basic and clinical subjects. The basic subjects included anatomy, histology, pathology, microbiology and biochemistry whereas clinical courses included lectures and seminars in internal medicine, surgery, infants and pediatrics as well as training courses with patients in University Hospitals.

I completed a PhD degree in applied Immunobiology and Transplantation at Newcastle University in 2012. My project was to examine the role of heparan sulphate (HS) in the process of fibrosis following graft transplantation. I subsequently worked as a research associate in the Institute of Genetic Medicine, Centre for Life, Newcastle University, UK, 2013-2016. This role was to investigate circular RNAs in mammalian cells depending on RNA-Seq data analysis performed in anucleate and nucleated cells as well as during development in stem cells.
