Sodium

Sodium is essential to human life and found in virtually all food and drinking water.

WHO Limit 

There is no health-based limit proposed by WHO; however, above 200mg/l will affect the taste of drinking water

Symptoms of Sodium Contamination:  

Sodium salts are not generally acutely toxic, taste of water will be affected before negative health effects occur. However, following accidental overdoses the following effects have been experienced:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Convulsions
  • Muscular twitching and rigidity
  • Cerebral and pulmonary oedema (oedema refers to swelling due to trapped fluid, and it can happen anywhere in the body)
