Phosphate

Phosphorus is essential for growth in both plants and animals. Phosphates can be used to treat lead in drinking water, but leaks and mismanagement can lead to eutrophication in water sources. Phosphates are not toxic to humans, but an extremely high level of consumption may lead to digestive problems.

WHO Limit

Due to the levels likely to be found in drinking water, WHO does not offer guidance on the limit of phosphate in water.
