Barium

Barium does not exist in nature in its elemental form but occurs as compounds with other elements and can be found in groundwater mainly due to contamination from natural deposits.

WHO Limit: 

1.3 mg/l

Symptoms of Barium Contamination: 

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Hypokalaemia (results in potassium levels in the blood being too low)
  • Cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Skeletal muscle paralysis
  • Death
