Halinishi Yusuf

I am a full time international PhD Student from Kenya under the kind support of ONEPlanet funding and made the decision to relocate together with my husband and 6-year-old son. I am happy to provide advice from my own experience as an international student mother and one that is transitioning to academia after10 years in industry.

My research interests revolve around dryland livelihoods and water resources resilience in changing climate and increased human activity, the different pathways of the sustainable use and conservation of natural resources and locally led initiatives to address the sustainable development. As a PhD researcher, I am looking at sustainable sand mining rates through the lens of freshwater availability in Ephemeral River Systems (ERS) in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands. Preceding my PhD study, I worked for a sub national government agency in Kenya mandated to regulate sand mining activities that exposed me to the intricate dynamics of management of sand resources and its governance.
