Work Packages

There are three Work Packages (WP):

WP1 — Capacity Building (Months 1–24)

Strengthening skills for robust, locally‑led dietary data collection.

WP1 is focused on capacity building which is at the core of this partnership and runs throughout the duration of the grant and beyond. This work package develops practical expertise in dietary assessment through hands‑on localisation, structured training, and long‑term technical support. Teams gain skills in food composition, portion image creation, user‑centred design, software installation, and validation study design—supported by workshops, weekly mentoring, and collaborative learning across regions. The result is a strong, sustainable network of trained researchers, developers and early‑career leaders equipped to deliver high‑quality dietary data in LMICs.

WP2 — Localisation & Adaptation (Months 1–14)

Transforming Intake24 into fully localised, culturally grounded LMIC versions.

WP2 focuses on adapting Intake24 to each country’s languages, foods and cultural context, ensuring the system works seamlessly for local users. Teams translate all content, configure language‑specific search tools, build comprehensive food lists, link foods to high‑quality composition data, and develop culturally relevant portion‑size methods. Each version is tested with local users before deployment.

Key Activities:

  • Translate and culturally adapt all user-facing content into local languages
  • Configure technical adaptations for different scripts, spelling variations and search behaviour
  • Develop comprehensive national food lists using local databases, surveys, supermarket audits and expert input
  • Match foods to composition data or calculate new nutrient values where gaps exist
  • Create portion-size methods, including new image sets and standard portion descriptions
  • Conduct small-scale user testing to refine accuracy, usability and completeness
  • Deploy local versions of Intake24 with ongoing technical support from regional software hubs

WP3 — Feasibility & Validation (Months 12–24)

Testing, refining and validating each country’s version of Intake24 to ensure accuracy, usability and cultural fit.

WP3 focuses on assessing how well the newly localised versions of Intake24 work in real‑world LMIC settings. Each country team will conduct feasibility testing, identify barriers and improvements, and develop robust validation study protocols. This work ensures that every national version of Intake24 is reliable, acceptable and ready for future large‑scale research and surveillance.

Key Activities

  • Conduct feasibility studies to assess usability, comprehension and cultural appropriateness
  • Identify barriers and limitations in system performance, user experience and dietary reporting
  • Refine localised versions based on participant feedback and technical testing
  • Develop country-specific validation protocols aligned with international best practice
  • Prepare teams for future funding applications to run full validation studies
  • Share findings across the network to strengthen methods and harmonise approaches
