Week 5 Webinar Information
Learn about and practice using the Digital Literacy Instructor in Dutch
The webinar starts with an introduction to the Digital Literacy Instructor and the ethos of high expectations and learner autonomy, where the teacher is the last resource. It then describes the development of DigLin and its evolution as a way to support not only adult learners but also younger learners learning to read for the first time in a new language as well as learners with some native language literacy. DigLin is included in a case study in the UNESCO Institute of Lifelong Learning’s publication, Leveraging innovative technology in literacy and education programmes for refugees, migrants and internally displaced persons. The hands-on portion of the webinar involves using the beginning-level Dutch materials to experience DigLin’s non-linear design, with immediate feedback, and the resulting implicit learning.

Jan Deutekom works at Firda, a vocational education institute in the Netherlands. When he worked as a teacher of Dutch as an L2, disappointment with the results of teaching led to his development of a pedagogical approach (FC-Sprint2) which he publicized in a book. The approach, applied to DigLin, promotes learner autonomy and prompts the learner to draw on multimedia resources for a high level of exposure but minimizes explicit instruction.
Rola Naeb, senior lecturer in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Northumbria University in the UK, has for over 15 years, worked on various projects focusing on empowering adult migrants by improving literacy and digital literacy provision. Among other publications, she is a co-author of the Literacy and Second Language Learning for the Linguistic Integration of Adult Migrants reference guide.
