Learning new languages in migrant contexts

‘With all the resources I have’. Learning new languages in migrant contexts

Linguistic spaces around the world are increasingly complex. This presents challenges for practitioners working with immigrants learning a new language who speak two or more languages.

‘With all the resources I have’. Learning new languages in migrant contexts is a new six-week course offered by Mari D’Agostino, Celia Farina and Egle Mocciaro this spring. The course will run from May to July 2026, with registrations now open.

Undocumented mobility among young people and adults is not a new phenomenon anywhere in the world. What is new are the forms of multilingualism and the sociolinguistic competences that characterise these people in movement. Understanding the resources of these speaker/learner profiles is an urgent challenge today for those working in the field of language education who feel the need for new tools to navigate an increasingly complex reality. This course was born from this need. It is the fruit of years of encounters and shared practices in the field with newly arrived young people who have crossed the Central Mediterranean, and it is designed for teachers, educators and practitioners working with multilingual speakers in any context.

It takes on ideas and assumptions about language learning and teaching and provides the chance to explore a new tool for language teaching in multi-lingual migration contexts: the CEFR Companion Volume, which while it emerged from the Council of Europe (2020) is highly relevant to countries worldwide.

The course then moves on to audio and video material from teaching workshops held in Palermo, Italy and introduces a multilingual approach for course participants to try out.

Personalised certificates are provided (on request) to participants who have completed the module.
