HPC Consortium for X-ray Spectroscopy

The development of high-brilliance light sources is transforming the capability of X-ray spectroscopy (XS) to deliver highly-detailed information about the local geometric, electronic, and spin structure of matter in a range of different environments.

Detailed theoretical studies are essential to provide a firm link between the XS observables and their interpretation. However, accurate 'core-level' XS simulations on medium-to-large-sized systems are computationally challenging as they often require a large number of individual calculations for each relevant core level.

The objective of the UK High-End Computing Consortium for X-ray Spectroscopy (HPC-CONEXS) is to take the lead on the development and distribution of computational tools to advance the detailed analysis of experimental XS data and leverage the synergies between experiment and theory developed through within the community to ensure maximal impact from the substantial UKRI investment into this area.

HPC-CONEXS will share its findings through a series of conferences and summer schools. Training resources from these events will be made available online allowing the learning outcomes of the events to be accessed by all. CONEXS will also support researchers by providing funding to facilitate short scientific exchanges.
