CONEXS Kick-off Meeting at Diamond Light Source

At the kick-off meeting, the project's Principal Investigator Tom Penfold introduced the programme of activity planned for CONEXS, which will include:

  • 3 conferences allowing problem-solving, networking and proposal writing.
  • 3 summer schools to share the project with the next generation of researchers.
  • Series of webinars to allow wider dissemination of the project.

A Virtual Beamline

Tom Schoonjans, Software Scientist for the Ada Lovelace Centre at Diamond, introduced CONEXS’s plan to create a virtual beamline in order to facilitate easier collaboration between XAS users. The virtual beamline would be a portal to launch simulations and enable increase our capability to interpret experimental data, which ultimately will increase the research outputs from X-ray spectroscopy at Diamond and the participating research teams.

Tom plans to release an alpha version of the portal with a limited userbase in around 1 year from now, with the goal of making this available to all in 2 years.

Case Studies

The kick-off meeting also involved a variety of short case study presentations from the wider CONEXS project team, with research interests ranging from health and energy to quantum materials to theoretical and computational physics.
