This project involved collaboration between Newcastle University and two institutions in India (Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras). The scope of this project was to evaluate the performance of air quality for Indian and UK urban traffic conditions. Researchers are involved in analyses of traffic and air pollution in key pockets of the three cities (Newcastle upon Tyne, Delhi and Chennai).
The thrust of this project was to understand the differences, the characteristics of travel behaviour, effect of vehicular emissions in hot, humid climates and cold, wet and windy climes. How the traffic flow and weather pattern impact on pollution would be scientifically quantified by the study. Further, identification of air quality models suitable for Indian conditions and their sensitivity has been studied. A local air quality management framework applicable to Indian cities has been developed.
The results of this project have been presented to key stakeholders including regulatory authorities, policy makers, urban planners and traffic engineers in two workshops held in India and UK.
