Air Quality for the North East Region

Project Leader: Professor Margaret Bell, Dr Anil Namdeo

Sponsors: Newcastle City Council

Project Details

This project involved monitoring and modelling of air quality in the North East region with a particular focus on the Tyne and Wear area. The main aims of this project were to set-up emission and air quality dispersion models in Tyne and Wear and carry out pervasive monitoring of air pollution and noise in selected areas. The project has set up the Airviro air quality modelling system for the North East with the help of SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute). The system has been populated with topography, road network and meteorological data and is ready to receive emission inventories for air quality model runs. The biggest achievement of this project has been the installation of PITHEM (Platform for Integrated Traffic, Health and Emission Modelling) for Tyne and Wear. PITHEM has taken the outputs from the strategic Transport Planning Model (TPM) and has generated emissions of CO2, nitrogen oxides, CO, volatile organic compounds and particulate matters. The platform is linked to a GIS system for display of the road network and associated emissions. Topographical and meteorological data has been combined with to set-up and run ADMS air quality model predicting spatial and temporal variation in air quality across Newcastle.
