Objectives

‌‌‌‌The objective of the Wildlife Technology lab is to passively support the conservation of native animals against the influx of invasive species using advanced low cost engineering technologies.

A number of prototypes including the RAMS (Remote Animal Monitoring System) and WATAMS (Wide Area Trap and Animal Monitoring System) are in development with the following benefits:

  • Benefits to animal welfare
  • Intelligent low cost solution
  • Passive animal monitoring techniques

To capture important additional information on red and grey squirrels a RAMS prototype was developed and tested. The low-cost electronic prototype has the ability to accurately record and store squirrel weight, photographic body & feet measurements and ambient temperature, whilst recording the time and date measurements are taken. The prototype allows for the remote recording of valuable morphological information to monitor individual squirrel development through time without recpaturing the animal.
