WATAMS Prototype Promotional Animation Video

A low cost prototype system for remotely monitoring traps in complex terrain and diverse landscapes using techniques common to the IoT (Internet of Things) and smart sensing. Our goal is to develop this prototype further into a fully working reliable system tested in the field.

An animation of the Wide Area Trap and Animal Monitoring System (WATAMS) which was highlighted at the Kelso event held by UK Squirrel Accord. [Click Video link below to run animation]

RAMS (Remote Animal Monitoring System)

The RAMS (Remote Animal Monitoring System) prototype is a unique device capable of accurately measuring animal charcateristics such weight, whilst recording time and date stamped high resolution lower body/feet photographic images. It is a portable battery powered weatherproof device that attaches to a tree and can be left in the field for approximately 8 days before battery replacement.

The RAMS unit can be used to help determine the following parameters (related to squirrels)

  • Weight of squirrel
  • Date and time of feeding periods
  • Determine whether red or grey squirrel via camera image
  • Gender of squirrel via camera image
  • Individual squirrels from unique markings or characteristics
  • Foot size dimensions
  • Surrounding ambient temperature

It was originally designed for monitoring red and grey squirrels but has proven to capture other small creatures.
