Background

2014

The initial project involving an engineering design concept started in August 2014, investigating the possibilities of detecting the difference between red and grey squirrels using low cost sensors, an embedded controller board and vision software. This developed and morphed into the academic supervision of MSc student projects running from September 2014-15 and an application for research funding to the Institute of Sustainability.

2015

Further work developing the RAMS (Remote Animal Monitoring System) and a successfull funding application to the SAgE (Science Agriculture and Engineering) Faculty for 'Strategic Development Funds for impact Generating Activity' (2015-16).

2016

Discussions to support the UK Squirrel Accord and demonstrations at conservation meetings, along with an invitation to discuss applications with local landowners in the North of England and Scottish border regions.

2017

The Wildlife Technology Lab delivered presentations at the Red Squirrels Knowledge Fair in Belfast. Research funding applications to the Institute of Sustainability and EPSRC to develop current prototypes and ideas.
