WG2b Classroom use of Roma languages

Classroom use of Roma language(s) (Romania)

The People2People school in Tinca, Romania, has already been encouraging Roma children to use their home language in the classroom. Examples of practice include:

  • monolingual teachers (or, multilingual but not including Roma languages) encouraging children to speak together in Roma before responding to the teacher in Romanian
  • displays of the Roma and Romanian alphabets side by side
  • wall displays with text in both Roma and Romanian, made with support from Roma teaching assistants.
