WG2 translanguaging

Translanguaging approach

ROMtels’ translanguaging/dual language approach is a natural and innovative way to support high quality teaching and learning.

Using home language as a normal, everyday aspect of the primary classroom explores three themes:

  • developing more open and trusting relationships between the children’s parents and their school
  • understanding children’s cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • increasing the value and respect of home languages and cultures.

A translanguaging approach makes sure children have access to cognitive academic language – which they need to learn about school subjects – in both their home language(s) and English.  This helps children talk about school work both in the classroom and at home with their parents and community.
