Great North Run 2024

The AJ Bell Great North Run is the world's biggest and best half marathon with tens of thousands of runners taking on the famous 13.1-mile course from Newcastle to South Shields every year.

On Sunday 8th September, a record number of runners descended on the Newcastle City Centre start line for the ‘great’ race and once again the Newcastle Centre was well represented. In keeping with our collaborative and interdisciplinary working practices, the eleven participants were made up of medicinal chemists from the Drug Discovery Group and our close colleagues from chemical biology.

As the atmosphere built, the obligatory pre-race photo was taken and as our runners made their way to the start line, spectators watched Olympic silver medallist Kieran Reilly set off the Elite athletes in his role as honorary starter for the 43rd event.

Our runners were all inspired by someone close to their heart, a worthy cause or a personal goal and took part to support and raise money for their respective charities. The money they raised adding to the estimated £25m raised overall.

It was a fantastic day, with the rainy weather conditions doing nothing to dampen spirits of competitors and supporters along the route. All our researchers safely crossed the finish line with incredible times and they should be very proud of such a great achievement!
