Great North Run 2023

On Sunday 10th September, over 60,000 runners descended on Newcastle City Centre for the Great North Run and once again the Drug Discovery Unit was well represented, with seven researchers taking part in the challenging half-marathon from Newcastle to South Shields.

As the atmosphere built, the Medicinal Chemists were joined by Sue Duncombe and Patrick McGuire for a pre-race photo. As well as being long time volunteers and fundraisers, Patrick and Sue are wonderful advocates for Cancer Research UK and have many years’ experience in Patient and Public Involvement, including focus groups, advisory boards, working parties and research groups.

Though the weather was superb for spectators, the runners were perhaps not so welcoming of the clear blue skies, and as Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe set the Elite men and masses off - including Sir Mo Farah, who was taking part in the last race of his career – the temperatures soared.

Our runners took part to support their respective charities, the money they raised adding to the estimated £25m raised overall for charity and goods causes.

It was a fantastic day despite the sudden change in weather, when torrential downpours caused travel chaos! But every runner finished with an incredible time and they should all be proud of such a great achievement!
