Fundraising 2024

As the end of the year approaches it's an ideal time to reflect on our fundraising efforts and the incredible support we’ve received. Every contribution plays a crucial role in helping us move closer to our goals and make a meaningful impact in the lives of those who need it most.

This year, the Medicinal Chemistry team led the way in raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK, ably joined by friends and colleagues from Bioscience and Chemical Biology. The funds raised will be used to support groundbreaking cancer research that has the potential to change the way we understand and ultimately treat cancer. Thanks to the generosity of those donating, innovative studies will be funded, clinical trials will be supported and essential resources for researchers will be provided.

Our research at the Newcastle Centre is critically dependent on the funding we receive from Cancer Research UK and we are proud to do our own bit towards fundraising as well.

Below is a brief summary of some of the milestones we’ve reached in 2024:

  • Total Funds Raised: £6,440.37 (+ £1,031.50 gift aid)
  • Number of Online Donations: 283
  • Events: Great North Run, Race for Life, Shine Walk, Pretty Muddy, Leeds Marathon, bake sales, pub quiz…to name but a few!

Although setting out with the main aim to raise money, taking part in events also provides an opportunity for researchers (and sometimes their families) to get together outside of the lab to promote social interaction, team building and cross-discipline discussion. I think it’s safe to say that everyone had an enjoyable time and we’ve been heartened to see some non-runners turn into half-marathon runners, personal best times being smashed and even Guinness World Records being broken. The latter by Dr Hannah Stewart who achieved the record for fastest half marathon by a female dressed as a scientist.

As we look ahead to next year, we are more determined than ever and will continue to seek new fundraising opportunities to make an even bigger difference in the fight against cancer.

Thank you to those who have helped to organise and/or taken part in events and most of all, thank you to those who have donated. We are so grateful for your support and ongoing commitment to cancer research, and we can’t wait to see what we can accomplish in the coming year!

If you’re inspired by our efforts, there’s still a few days left to consider making a year-end donation to add to our 2024 total!
