Newcastle researchers successfully complete Race for Life at Home challenge

Week beginning Monday 4th May 2020 saw researchers from the Cancer Research UK Newcastle Drug Discovery Unit set out to cover 1000 miles in a virtual relay to promote Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Home. The distance represented a circuit of all 5 CRUK Drug Discovery Units from Newcastle to Glasgow, to Manchester, to London, to Cambridge and back to Newcastle, with a few extra miles thrown in for good measure!

Whilst observing social distancing guidelines, the team used their daily exercise allowance to cross the finish line after only 4 days of running, cycling walking and skipping. They therefore vowed to continue for the remainder of the week to see if they could go round again! On Sunday evening the team crossed the line for the second time, having covered a total distance of 2045 miles.

With 55 people logging their miles, this was an amazing team effort and a fantastic way to bring everyone together for such a good cause. Professor Mike Waring added: "We hope that our activity will raise awareness of the new fundraising activities and that people will be inspired to take on their own Race for Life at Home challenges.”
