LEAF Award

Following an audit, the Medicinal Chemistry Labs at the Newcastle Drug Discovery Unit have been awarded a SILVER award for lab sustainability. The LEAF programme, short for the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework, is a self-assessment tool targeted at research, teaching and medical laboratories.

LEAF contains actions which lab users can utilise to save energy, plastics, water and other resources. By taking part in the programme, laboratories reduce their carbon emissions and create an environment that supports research quality.

Volunteer chemists got together and aimed to implement sustainability practices into everyday working. The lab was awarded BRONZE in March 2024 and through hard work and dedication from the team, SILVER followed in August 2024.

Thank you to the Sustainability Team for your ongoing efforts: Dr Jennyfer Ricci, Dr Grace Roper, William Thompson, Holly Walker and Elle Watson.

Next stop GOLD!
