City and Region

Newcastle upon Tyne is a welcoming and lively city; the capital of the North East of England.

Although named for the Norman castle in its centre, the city has its roots in Roman times. Remnants of Roman construction exist alongside a medieval cathedral, impressive Georgian streets, and the rejuvenated quayside area with its renowned bridges.

Newcastle lies at the heart of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, known for its glorious unspoilt countryside, beautiful coastline and rich heritage. Particularly notable are Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans to delineate the northernmost reach of their empire, and the spectacular castles dotted along the Northumbrian coast.
