PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
PERCEIVED BENEFITS
The main reasons for undertaking the POWADIMA research project include:
  • Assisting the water industry to reduce it's operating costs and losses, to the benefit of customers in terms of charges;
  • Improving the standard of service provided to customers in terms of supply pressures, water quality and continuity of supply;
  • Contributing to a more sustainable future by decreasing demands on water resources and promoting energy efficiency;
  • Enabling capital investment in the infrastructure to meet genuine demand growth to be deferred by reducing losses from the water-distribution network;
  • Providing a competitive advantage in terms of technical know-how for the particular companies and academic institutions directly involved, together with any other organizations which may benefit later;
  • Providing market opportunities and hence improve employment prospects for manufacturers of SCADA equipment.

COMMERCIAL PROSPECTS
The process being developed will have worldwide application within the water sector, beginning with the more developed countries of western Europe, North America and Australia. The methodology is generic in the sense that it can be applied to any water-distribution network. Moreover, the approach could have relevance to other sectors such as gas, electricity and telecommunications which have large networks to control. Nevertheless, it is envisaged that at least initially, the main customer will be the water industry. The prime attraction to water companies is the prospect of significantly reducing the operating costs through improved pressure and energy management but they will need to be convinced that the benefits are real.
