UK SOLAS projects

The group has a number of projects running under the UK SOLAS programme. The overall aim of the SOLAS project is to advance understanding of environmentally significant interactions between the atmosphere and ocean.

The Ocean Research Group is directly involved through two tied PhD projects linked with the University of Warwick and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory. These projects are primarily interested in the role of bacteria at the sea surface (the Bacterioneuston) and surfactants in air-sea trace gas exchange. Further information on these projects can be found on our SOLAS projects page.

Joint SOLAS Bergen Mesocosm Experiment 2008

We are also involved in another SOLAS project, the 'Joint SOLAS Bergen Mesocosm Experiment 2008' that aims to unify a number of individual projects within the current NERC SOLAS directed programme, including those described above.

Further information can be found on our Mesocosm project pages.

Trace gases in Tropical Coastal zones

This work is aims to investigate how important marine systems, especially coastal systems, are to the global cycles of climatically active trace gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, and volatile sulphur.
