The University of Newcastle has two research projects as part of the UK SOLAS programme. The overall aim of the SOLAS project is to advance understanding of environmentally significant interactions between the atmosphere and ocean. The University of Newcastle is directly involved through two tied PhD projects linked with the University of Warwick and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory.

Project 1- The role of bacterioneuston in air-sea gas exchange linked with the University of Warwick
Professor Colin Murrell (Warwick), Professor Rob Upstill-Goddard (Newcastle) and Emma Harrison (Newcastle)
Dr Michael Cunliffe is working on a similar project entitled Bacterial Ecology of the Sea Surface Microlayer at the University of Warwick and the two projects are closely linked.

Project 2- DOGEE-SOLAS The UK SOLAS Deep Ocean Gas Exchange Experiment linked with the Plymouth Marine Laboratory
