February’s NUFEB Science talk saw Dr Phil Holden, lecturer in earth system modelling at the Open University, present his work on the evaluation of earth system uncertainty through the development and application of computationally fast models. His excellent talk focused on the applications of emulators in earth systems modelling, addressing calibration, understanding model behaviour and using emulators as surrogates for the model in coupling applications. Phil spoke about the development of emulators for projection of future climate change using GENIE and PLASIM climate models. Phil showed how his emulator is applied to evaluate climate change impacts on crops and energy demands, including predictions of global temperature, precipitation, and heating and cooling degree days. He also highlighted his current research work on spatial dynamic field modelling and spatio-temporal emulation of species biodiversity.
