December's Science talk- Gavin Melaugh - University of Edniburgh

Gavin Melaugh, from Rosalind Allens group at the University of Edinburgh, came to visit and give the NUFEB science talk. His work on investigating the biological physics of bacterial aggregation, gave us a fascinating insight into how Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria known to form biofilms and complications in lung infections, aggregates. The importance of a sugar called Psl for the formation of bacterial aggregates was highlighted, along with a series of simple but clever experiments to work out what is driving aggregation and why and how the bacteria stick to each other. The seminar highlighted to NUFEB scientics that the aggregation of bacteria is not something that is fully understood, but is critical to the way biological systems, that contain biofilms and flocs, are modelled.

We thank Gavin for his excellent and interesting talk.
