April 2018 NUFEB Science Talk- Dr Sam Coveney

On Thursday the 22nd of February, Sam Coveney, a Research Associate in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield gave a talk to the NUFEB project team on Gaussian process emulators. His talk focused on the use of emulators in various forms of uncertainty quantification, including sensitivity analysis and the identification of plausible model inputs using history matching. The talk covered the use of emulators in relation to modelling electrical pulses in the heart and current attempts to go beyond Gaussian process emulators using Gaussian Markov random fields to represent quantities on patient specific MRI scans of the left atrium of the heart. Sam has also worked as part of a group developing a Python package for use in training Gaussian process emulators with the aim of increasing the usability of these processes outside of expert groups. The work presented gave great insight into the possibilities model emulation provides for complex systems, and the roles they might play in the development of wastewater treatment technology.

Many thanks to Sam for his interesting and inspiring talk.
