Learning and Teaching Resources
Learning and teaching activity for schools
How are Roman Art and Archaeology still relevant today?
The main aim of the teaching pack is to encourage pupils to research ancient Roman paintings and artefacts, to think about their relevance to contemporary life, to get inspired and be creative!
You are provided with three sets of background information and four learning activities that you can use to work around a single topic. Each activity suggested in this teaching pack can be used as a single teaching unit.
However, if you wish, you can decide to work on all four activities (why not involve several classes in your school?). Each activity will contribute to the creation of one section of an exhibition that you can set up in your school. The exhibition would display the result of pupils’ research into Roman painting, housing, religion and material culture and would show how pupils got inspired by these topics.
For whom?
This teaching pack is designed to work both for primary and secondary schools. The level of the activities and the discussions can be tailored to the level of the class and to the aims of the teaching sessions.
How to
Phase 1 – Download and read the Background Information to learn about the site, Roman houses in Pompeii and in Herculaneum and some of the objects discovered during the excavations. Teachers can use Background information to get to know more about the site before presenting it to their pupils or give the sheets as readings.
Unusual or technical words used in the text are highlighted in red and discussed in the Glossary.

Phase 3 – Use ready-made Presentation Slides to present information to the class: they show images of houses and objects from Herculaneum and Pompeii, and images of the House of the Beautiful Courtyard and the House of the Cryptoporticus.
Phase 4 – Engage pupils with four Learning Activities, each covering a different topic. Each activity can be used as a single teaching unit. Alternatively, all four activities can be offered to the class throughout the term and contribute to the creation of an exhibition that can set up in school.
