Methods / Data Collection

Three data collection and analysis methods will produce findings to address the five aspects (Aims) of the Chemsex scene in Newcastle we think are important to understand.

  1. Expert (informal) interviews with key practitioners in the city will be undertaken at the start of the project to share existing knowledge and expertise. This will ensure the project is embedded in the local community and is of use to those supporting people in the Chemsex scene.
  2. A Stories Platform will enable scene participants to write and submit their anonymised Chemsex Stories. Participants will be invited to reflect on their experiences on Chemsex in Newcastle. Information about relevant support services will be advertised on the Platform. Narrative and thematic analysis of the stories (experiential data) will produce findings on experiences, Chemsex places, and outreach opportunities (Aims).
  3. An online targeted population survey, advertised to Chemsex scene participants by services, and in relevant (LGBTQ+, online, physical) spaces across the city. Survey participants will answer an anonymous and confidential online questionnaire about any polydrug use related to their participation in Chemsex. The focus will be on prevalence, patterns, existing harm reduction practices and help-seeking practices, and challenges to accessing services. Information about relevant (drug, sexual health) services will be advertised on a secure survey platform run by Newcastle University research software services.
