AGE Research Group secures funding for public engagement activities

AGE Research Group members Dr Sarah Richardson (Clinical Lecturer), Helen Atkinson (PPIE Manager) and Professor Miles Witham (Professor of Trials for Older People) have been awarded funding to undertake public engagement work about delirium and multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) with older people.

The funding was awarded from the Dunhill Medical Trust Academy Ignition Fund. The Dunhill Medical Trust is one of the leading investors in research specifically focusing on improving the health and well-being of older people.

The award will be used to fund patient and public engagement (PPIE) activities with people affected by delirium, either personally or in a close friend or relative.  Delirium is a distressing, sudden onset confusion, affecting around one in five older people in hospital.  Unfortunately, PPIE is absent from most existing delirium research and there are few research studies focusing specifically on the relationship between delirium and MLTC.

By holding inclusive focus groups, this award will enable the AGE Research Group to gain a greater understanding of what is important to people with experience of delirium and MLTC and what they think our research priorities should be.  This pilot work will also enable us to develop lasting relationships with diverse and under-served communities and develop PPIE expertise within the AGE Research Group.
