 'Advanced aero & hydrodynamics for sail-assisted ship propulsion'

 

Research Team:

Objectives: Alternative renewable means of powering ships is vitally important if global emissions and the economic viability of shipping is to be sustained. This research will investigate methods for reduced fuel usage from global shipping through the application of advanced sail-assisted system. The aerodynamics associated with sail design and the interaction with conventional propulsion and the impact on the vessel hydrodynamics is complex and design and analysis tools need to be developed. SWAN and SJTU are currently developing a joint research programme in this field.

Engagement: Reciprocal visits to carry out preliminary research to support the development of a long term research programme will take place.
