Byker District Heating

Photos from the visit

Quick Facts:

The District Heating system supplies heat and hot water to the properties on the Byker estate. The system includes 3 gas-fired boilers and a biomass boiler that works on wood chip. A combined heat and power (CHP) engine produces electricity which is sold back to the grid.

For the third year in a row there has been no increase in heat charges for the Byker Wall Estate residents. This is despite the fact that the main energy providers have increased their gas prices by over 30% in the same time period. We have achieved this partnership with Newcastle City Council by installing more efficient boilers and improving insulation levels in homes.

The replacement of the District Heating System will take approximately two years. A major upgrade of the District Heating system is planned over a two year period starting in April 2014, with the initial work being the replacement of the mains pipework.
