Research interests include: Electrochemistry of polyoxometalates and their application in energy storage, redox flow batteries, ionic liquids.
Jochen Friedl is currently a research associate in the workgroup of Prof. Ulrich Stimming in the School of Chemistry at Newcastle University. In March 2015 he defended his dissertation with the title "Advanced Materials for Redox Flow Batteries" at the Technische Universität München, Germany and passed with the highest distinction.
He was Research Associate and later Research Fellow at the TUM CREATE research project in Singapore where he investigated novel materials for redox flow batteries, supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries.
He is an expert in determining the catalytic properties of carbon electrodes and the investigation of classic and novel chemistries for flow batteries.
He was on the Scientific Committee for the CARISMA conference 2017 held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and organized the programme and managed the course of the meeting. For the special issue on the conference, published in Fuel Cells, he acts as Guest Editor.
