1. SHAPES Cohort Study

Phase 1: The SHAPES Cohort Study

This phase of the research will explore body shape in early pregnancy and how it might be related to the health of women and pregnant people and their babies. The NHS uses Body Mass Index (BMI) to identify who might need extra care in pregnancy. However, there may be more accurate measures than BMI to understand who would most benefit from extra pregnancy care. We will look at body shape in early pregnancy, and need participants with a whole range of BMIs to take part.

We are inviting pregnant women and pregnant people to take part in SHAPES research who are attending the Royal Victoria Infirmary maternity unit at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for their 12-week scan appointment.

This phase of the research started in April 2022 and will continue for approximately 18 months. We are aiming to include 1400 participants in this phase of SHAPES.

The SHAPES PIS Document provides more detail on what is involved in the study and how it is being conducted.

We also have a Poster which we are using to advertise this phase of the study.
