1. SHAPES Cohort Study
This phase of the research explored body shape in early pregnancy and how it might be related to the health of pregnant women and their babies.
The NHS uses Body Mass Index (BMI) to identify who might need extra care in pregnancy. However, we wanted to explore whether different measurements can identify who would most benefit from extra pregnancy care.
We invited pregnant women with a range of BMIs, who were attending the Royal Victoria Infirmary maternity unit at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for their 12-week scan appointment, to take part in SHAPES research.
This phase of the study started in April 2022 and it continued until April 2024, with 1450 participants. All babies of the participants were born by November 2024.
