Derek is Head of Politics at Newcastle University. Derek completed his BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Balliol College, Oxford University in 1990 before returning to the North-East of England. He completed his PhD in 1999 and was subsequently appointed Leverhulme Special Research Fellow (2001-2003). He then progressed to Lecturer (2003), Senior Lecturer (2006), Reader (2012) and finally Chair in Environmental Political Theory (2014). Derek’s research is on environmental and social justice and he co-teaches a third stage undergraduate module, 'Community-based research in politics', which gives students the opportunity to conduct original applied research in collaboration with local voluntary and public sector organisations
