REACH

REACH (Researching Equity, Access and Cancer Health Outcomes) are a research team

based in Newcastle University Population Health Sciences Institute and led by Professor Linda Sharp.

Our work spans the cancer pathway from prevention through to survivorship, with a particular focus on reducing inequalities in cancer outcomes.

Our research interests include:

Cancer Aetiology

Exploring the causes, origins, and reasons behind cancer

Cancer Screening

Aiming to improve detection of cancer in people with no symptoms

Cancer Treatment

Understanding how cancer treatments are used in real-world practice, what influences the choices patients and clinicians make, and how we can support people to receive the most effective and appropriate care

Cancer Survivorship

Investigating the long-term physical, psychological, social, and economic outcomes of people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis, and how care can be improved at every stage of that journey

What we do

As a multidisciplinary team we combine expertise in:

Qualitative research

From in-depth interviews and focus groups, through to creative and participatory methods (such as arts-based and visual approaches) that help people share experiences which can be difficult to put into words alone

Analysis of large-scale routine healthcare datasets

We analyse national datasets including NHS England national cancer registry, hospital datasets and primary care records

Mixed-methods research

We combine quantitative and qualitative approaches to build a more complete picture of cancer experiences and outcomes than either method can offer on its own

Clinical trials and trial methodology

We design, deliver, and analyse randomised controlled trials evaluating interventions to improve cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.

Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE)

We work in partnership with patients, clinicians, and members of the public to shape our research questions, methods, and outputs, ensuring our work reflects the priorities of the people it aims to serve.
