PhD working title: The environmental impacts of seawater scrubbing

Supervisors: Dr. Brigitte Behrends andDr. Guenther Uher (Newcastle)

My Ph.D. research is based upon the possible environmental impact associated with the use of an exhaust gas cleaning system, namely seawater scrubbing, a means of flu-gas desulphurisation which is currently being trialled onboard a sea-going commercial vessel on the English Channel. The aim of the scrubber system is to reduce pollution to air from ships in accordance with International Marine Organisation legislation; I aim to determine, through extensive fieldwork and research whether this reduction in air pollution is simply being converted to marine pollution, and if so the potential impacts.
