Ageing & Intergenerational Dynamics

Older people’s memories have distinctive analytical value. When undertaking life history interviews, we record the experience of change across lifetimes and connect what is present to what has been lost or transformed. Our interest in ageing focuses on three main strands:

  • Intergenerational remembering
  • Ageing and memory
  • Ageing and agency

The Remember 1926 project foregrounds post-memory; the earlier Women in Shipbuilding project, work on food poverty memories and Living Deltas research in environmental history in India, Bangladesh and Vietnam all addressed how memories are communicated between generations. Both Ryan Fallon and Lily Tidman’s PhD projects include analyses of intergenerational dynamics as part of their approaches.
