Primary care research in Newcastle is entering a new and exciting phase. The University is already an acknowledged International Centre of Excellance in Ageing Research. The award of the Queen's Anniversary Prize in Ageing and Primary Care in 2010 was followed at the end of 2014 by a £20M award from the Government to establish a National Innovation Centre for Ageing. Following this in 2018 we were successful in being awarded as a Centre of Excellence funded by the Alzheimer's Society.
From October 2015, Newcastle joined the National Institute for Health Research School for Primary Care Research (NIHR SPCR). The school is made up of the nine leading academic centres for Primary Care Research in England; Bristol, Cambridge, Keele, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Southampton and University College London. Re-application to be a School member will take place in 2019 where Newcastle will submit to be a member for a further five years.
