Primary care research in Newcastle is entering a new and exciting phase.  The University is already an acknowledged International Centre of Excellance in Ageing Research.  The award of the Queen's Anniversary Prize in Ageing and Primary Care in 2010 was followed at the end of 2014 by a £20M award from the Government to establish a National Innovation Centre for Ageing.  Following this in 2018 we were successful in being awarded as a Centre of Excellence funded by the Alzheimer's Society. We also held the SAPC North Conference in both 2017 and 2018 which was a great success.

In January 2019 in collaboration with The University of Manchester - Lead (SPCR Member) and the London School of Economics sucessfully launched the NIHR Older People and Frailty Policy Research Unit (PRU). The aims of the PRU are to produce timely, high quality evidence for policymakers.

From October 2015, Newcastle joined the National Institute for Health Research School for Primary Care Research (NIHR SPCR).  

We are part of the Ageing and Geroscience Theme in the Population Health Sciences Institute and work closely with School for Public Health Research which is located at Newcastle University.
