Take Part
We are looking for people to contribute to different parts of the project (though we are happy to have participants complete both).
Laboratory studies
Participants will attend Newcastle University and complete computer-based tasks while we record muscle activity from the arm using sensors placed on the skin.
No previous experience with muscle recording or computer interfaces is required.
Discussion and focus groups
We are also looking for people to discuss the wider implications of muscle-sensing technologies.
Discussions will include topics such as
- experiences and usability of EMG-based interfaces;
- consent and future use of muscle data;
- privacy and interpretation of subtle muscle signals;
- unintended or incorrectly triggered actions;
- unexpected health information; and
- security and identification risks.
You do not need scientific or technical knowledge to take part. We are interested in a wide range of perspectives.

What will happen to my data
All study data are controlled by the research team, which retains full responsibility for the conduct of the research and for decisions regarding analysis, reporting, and publication of the findings. All information which is collected about you during the course of the research will be kept strictly confidential. Your data will be digital (both behavioural and electrophysiological recordings) and will contain no identifiable information that can be related back to yourself.
Your data will be stored on the Newcastle University’s secure servers for at least 10 years – the first 3 years will be the duration of this study plus an additional 7 years, to allow completion of any outstanding publications, and should the data be of further interest to ourselves or other for related research. After that time, we would aim to upload the data onto an open access repository for anyone to access freely . If you wish for your research data to be deleted at the conclusion of the 10 years please let us know at any point prior to that time.
