Professor Mike J Waring

Mike is the Director of the MoSMed CDT.  He is Chair of Medicinal Chemistry at Newcastle University and Head of Chemistry for the Cancer Research UK Drug Discovery Unit and the chemistry lead for the Newcastle University Centre for Cancer. Mike joined Newcastle in 2015 after 14 years in industrial medicinal chemistry research at AstraZeneca.

He has a track record of successful medicinal chemistry including the discovery of 14 clinical candidates and one approved drug (osimertinib).

His work is widely recognised, most recently by the RSC Malcolm Campbell Medal (2017) and the American Chemical Society Heroes of Chemistry Prize (2018) in recognition of the discovery of successful innovative medicines.  

As the Director of the CDT, Mike provides strategic leadership and oversight of the running of the project, inlcuding engagement with industry.
