Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowships
Newcastle University’s Medieval and Early Modern Studies Faculty Research Group invites expressions of interest from eligible researchers seeking to apply to the Individual Fellowship-European Fellowship scheme of the Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Actions. These Fellowships last 12-24 months and have a research project as their focus, with a strong element of advanced training both in the research area and in transferable skills. The ideal fellow will be able to engage in a two-way transfer of knowledge, acquiring skills and/or knowledge from and sharing her or his expertise wit, Newcastle researchers.
Medieval and Early Modern Research Studies is an interdisciplinary research group which incorporates MEDLAB (Early Medieval, Late Antique and Byzantine Studies). MEMS’ members belong to the disciplines of Literature, Archaeology, History, Classics and Music and are listed here:

We specifically welcome applications in the following key areas:
- Early Medieval, Late Antique and Byzantine Studies
- Roman frontier studies
- Late medieval and early modern book history and manuscript studies
- Drama and/or performance in the medieval and early modern periods, including musical performance and reading aloud
- European intellectual and religious history
- Scholarly editing projects
- Digital humanities projects (especially TEI-based projects)
- We cordially encourage and welcome applications from outstanding scholars eager to work in an interdisciplinary environment for the Individual Fellowship Scheme. Applicants must have a track record (appropriate to career stage) of peer-reviewed publication(s) in internationally recognised outlets. Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements:
Eligibility
On the date of the deadline, candidates:
- must have at least four years’ full-time equivalent research experience (which can include doctoral studies)
- and/or be in possession of a doctoral degree.
- cannot have spent more than 12 months of the past 3 years in the UK.
If the fellow is resuming research after a career break of at least one year (within the 18 months immediately prior to the deadline), or is a European national or long term resident returning to Europe after a period outside Europe, a modified mobility rule applies: in these cases the researchers must not have carried out their main activity in the country of their host for more than 3 years in the 5 years immediately prior to the deadline.

- CV (maximum of 2 sides of A4)
- Outline of project, the training you need to achieve the project goals, and why Newcastle University is a good place to do this particular project. You should identify a preferred supervisor.(maximum of 2 sides of A4)
- Confirmation that you meet the eligibility criteria (in a cover letter)
These should be sent as a single PDF with your name as the file name. Applications which do not include these three components and/or which are over-length will not be considered.
Selection Process
Expressions of interest will be assessed by the MEMS steering committee and by colleagues with specific expertise in the project area. Only applicants that meet the eligibility criteria and our additional criteria will be considered. The most promising applicant(s) based on the relative strength of CVs and proposals will be provided with further guidance and support for the purposes of submitting a full Individual Fellowship application with the nominated supervisor.
Successful applicants will work within the same School as their supervisor, will be invited to present to and lead MEMS seminars and workshops and enabled, if they wish, to curate a programme of events relevant to their project.

Society for Renaissance Studies Postdoctoral
Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Society for Renaissance Studies invites applications for its Postdoctoral Fellowships, which support research in all aspects of Renaissance studies. There will be two Postdoctoral Fellowships awarded in the academic year 2018-19, worth £9500.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must be graduates of British or Irish universities, and currently engaged in full-time research, part-time teaching or independent scholarship.
- Applicants must either already have been awarded their PhD no more than five years before 1 October 2018, or have been provisionally awarded their PhD by 31st May 2018, subject to no more than minor corrections (these corrections must be due to be completed and accepted by the awarding University no later than 1 October 2018, and applicants applying before their PhD has been passed will need to provide evidence of the status of their PhD when applying).
- In normal circumstances, such fellowships should not be held in conjunction with a postdoctoral or academic teaching post which is for more than 60% of a full-time post.
Conditions:
- The period of tenure is twelve months from 1 October.
- Fellows are required to become members of the SRS and will be invited to attend meetings of the Society’s Council.
- Fellows will be asked to present their findings at the end of the period of award, and to submit a written report for publication in the Society’s Bulletin
- Fellows must name the Society for Renaissance Studies in their affiliation in any publications and conference papers presenting the research.
Applicants should submit a single document by 30th April 2018, giving, in this order:
- Name and contact details (name, address, email number, telephone number)
- Project description (covering the research questions, existing debate in the areas, and how the applicant proposes to change this by their research). Maximum 1000 words.
- a CV (including a brief account of their research to date, and a statement of their proposed means of financial support during the year of the fellowship). Maximum 1000 words.
- Name and contact details of two referees (these will only be contacted for a reference in the case of applicants who are long-listed; they will be asked to give a reference before 31st May 2018).
- Proof of the status of the PhD, where not yet awarded, should be submitted as a separate document, where relevant.
