Researcher positionality and the use of the Framework method to understand the lived experiences of Palestinian patients and patient companions referred abroad
Colonialism, settler colonialism and occupation of Palestinians have forced them to rely on referrals abroad to seek healthcare for decades. The current genocide in Gaza has caused the collapse of the health system resulting in a severe shortage of health services and a complete lack in some specialized and advanced services as well as tens of thousands of very complex injuries needing referral abroad. Patients referred abroad usually travel with a family companion while the rest of the family remains in Gaza leading to family separation and changing family dynamics. In my PhD, I conducted interviews with 27 referred patients, 12 patient companions (carer family members) and 10 specialist physicians from Gaza to explore the health and social impacts of the referrals on patients and their families. In this talk, I will explain how my positionality as a doctor from Gaza with family still there influenced my choice of the Framework method and how I’m using it to analyse the lived experiences of patients and patient companions. I do so by looking at patient and family lived experiences of their therapeutic journey across time (October 2023 – Dec 2025) and space (different parts of Gaza and abroad).
