Please note that this symposium is open to those who use, or are interested in, qualitative approaches, whether novice or established from institutions across the UK.
Symposium theme: Reflecting on Qualitative Research
Abstract submission deadline: Friday the 3rd of October 2026
Registration: Opening on Monday the 28th of September 2026
Registration fees:
- Postgraduate delegate (whether internal or external): £10
- Newcastle University/internal delegate: £15
- External delegate: £20
If a lay co-applicant, public contributor, or public involvement and engagement panel member would like to attend this event they can do so for free, however, they will need to be nominated by their research/academic colleagues to be registered as a delegate. Please contact the QualSIG at QualSIG@newcastle.ac.uk in order to nominate.

Themed streams:
- Interdisciplinary Qualitative Research: Reflections and challenges of qualitative research spanning disciplines/ methodologies including mixed methods/ theoretical approaches
- Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement: Involving PPIE partners in qualitative research - challenges and lessons learnt
- Ontology and Epistemology in practice: Navigating philosophical underpinnings of reality and knowledge in qualitative research
- Ethics and Artificial Intelligence (AI): Using AI responsibly and ethically in qualitative research
- Free topic/open: for those who wish to share their work but do not feel that can directly speak to the themed streams
Prizes:
- Best Abstract: Selected from all submitted abstracts
- Early-Stage Career Researcher/PhD Spotlight session: Selected from all presentations in the ESCR spotlight session
