QualSIG Data and Methods Group presents Netnography applied to nurse led research

Stacey Munnelly, a clinical Advanced Nurse Practitioner, will be presenting her experience of using investigative, interactive and immersive Netnographic research methods to explore the experiences of patients with chronic pancreatitis. Stacey’s talk will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion.

Netnography, is a research methodology that was introduced as a form of online ethnography, by pioneer researcher Professor Robert Kozinets in 1998.  The aim of Netnography is to understand a group of people through their online social conversations, languages, behaviours interactions and techno- cultures. Netnography is a well-established research methodology within the fields of marketing and tourism. It has been used to understand consumer insights and design a host of successful products tailored to consumer needs and preferences. However, netnography is rapidly moving into other social sciences like education and healthcare. The methodology is being used to investigate a range of social concepts including patient and nurses’ experiences and preferences, helping to increase understanding of how people express care and support within online communities. Most importantly the methods offer ethical systematic, comparable and creative processes for healthcare researchers to follow.
