‘Finding ‘me’ through wheelchair basketball: Using autoethnography to examine identity reconstruction following acquired disability’
Adam Dickinson-Shill, Research Associate, Loughborough University
This talk presents an evocative autoethnographic study of identity reconstruction following acquired disability after treatment for sacral chondrosarcoma. It explores how autoethnography can be used to present subjective, raw, emotional experiences, encouraging reader immersion, empathy, and reflection. The study traces identity disruption and (re)formation, positioning wheelchair basketball and its community as a transformative space for finding belonging and facilitating acceptance of a new disability identity. Focusing on methodological choices, the talk examines storytelling, reflexivity, and researcher positionality, alongside issues of rigour and ethics. It highlights the value of autoethnography as a methodology for presenting rich, empathetic insights into identity, illness, and recovery within qualitative health and sport research.
